LC Volleyball Open Up on the Road; Gain Valuable Experience
August 28, 2012
Glen Ellyn, IL – The Lincoln College women’s volleyball team opened up action at the College of DuPage Round Robin Tournament in Glen Ellyn, IL and finished with a 1-3 record. Although the record may have taken a hit, Lincoln College head coach Mark Tippett said his team gained valuable experience for his young squad.
“We are relying on big contributions from freshman players this year and it is going to take some time for them to adjust to the speed of the college game”, said Tippett. “We never got going against Moraine Valley and started out rough against Ancilla, but midday through the Ancilla match we started to click on defense and got better swings in transition.”
Lincoln was led by Jenna Merkel (Harvel, IL) with 35 kills, 9 points, and 29 digs. LaTasha Fizer (Romeoville, IL) added 19 kills and 10 blocks. Morgan Lescher (Brownsburg, IN) 29 kills, 8 points; Vicky Ariolla (Romeoville, IL) 53 set assists, 12 points; Jordan Michaels (Plainfield, IL) 39 set assists, 8 points; Beth Daniels (Willisville, IL) 15 kills, 6 blocks; and Alyssa Morales (Romeoville, IL) 35 digs, 5 points round out the weekend tournament totals.
“Our match against Lake County showed that we are capable of controlling the ball well enough to win”, Tippett said. “Unfortunately, we lost a key player in sophomore Kelly Anderson (Schaumburg, IL) to injury in the match against Oakton and had to go with a makeshift lineup. Our players rallied, but we did not play consistently enough to keep a lead. I was encouraged by a lot of what our team did this weekend. We have a few adjustments to make and several areas that need improvement, but I am confidant our players are up to the challenge.”
Lincoln travels to Illinois Valley Community College for a 6:00pm match on Wednesday, August 29.
